NFL Rules - Coin Toss

football online game

When it comes to the NFL coin toss, there are a number of different ways to win. However, what you may not know is how winning and losing teams have performed historically. Here are some statistics. Consider first the percentage of teams who win coin tosses. Consider who won the coin-toss each season.

Rule change for nfl cointoss

The Chiefs' win over the Bills in a shootout was the catalyst for the NFL coin toss rule changes. It was a thrilling fourth quarter, with the Chiefs gaining 44 yards in only two plays. The Bills didn’t win the ball. This caused controversy among fans, who said the rule put too much emphasis on the coin toss.

NFL research found that 10 out of 11 playoff game winners have been teams that won the coin flip since the new rule was introduced. In addition, teams that have won the coin toss in the regular season have gone 40-35-7. These changes wouldn't have had an impact on Baltimore's last week's defeat.

The change will take effect in 2021, but will only be used in postseason games. It was a tight coin toss in the playoff game between the Bills and Chiefs. The Chiefs, who trailed by eight points at the time of the game, scored on the first drive of overtime. The Chiefs' only touchdown in overtime was their first-half touchdown.

Percentages of nfl cointoss wins

Although the NFL rules on coin-toss are not finalized, there is a pattern to be seen in the win rates of those who have won the toss. During the 2001-2010 season, teams that won the toss won about 48.5% of the games, while teams that lost the toss won just over half of them.

In the postseason, teams which have won the toss are statistically more likely to win. Teams that have won the coin toss in 34.4 percent of all games have won it since 1994. 25 percent of games have been lost. The team that wins the coin-toss has a 9.6% greater chance of winning.

The winning team has a record of 86-67-10 wins-loss since the coin toss was moved to five yards after the game began. The winning team has won all 11 playoff games. Seven of them were won on the first driving.

Record of the nfl's coin toss champion team

The Kansas City Chiefs have a 9-0 record on coin tosses in 2018. In eight of nine games, they have scored on the first possession. That streak was broken only once by the New York Giants in 2012. The Chicago Bears are 0-11 on coin tosses this season.

Since 2010, the NFL has changed the rules of the coin toss. In overtime, teams that win the coin throw are now 10-2. In addition, they have won seven playoff games on the first possession of overtime. Although this is not ideal, it is possible.

In the past 35 Super Bowls the coin toss winner won the game 24 times. This includes two Super Bowls when the coin was won by NFC. In Super Bowl LV, Kansas City won the coin toss, but lost to Tampa Bay. Since 2008 the coin toss champion team has decided to defer receiving their ball until the second period, with the exception New Orleans in Super Bowl XLIV (2009).
